10 pet safety tips
By cuzzy | March 31, 2009
With the weather getting better soon, the dogs are going to be outside more and that means time to practice good safety.
The tips below are essential to emergency preparedness.
1. Make sure that your pet wears a well-fitting collar with an ID tag that has up-to-date contact information.
2. Train your dog. A well-trained, obedient dog is safer, more responsive and happier.
3. Always keep your pet on a leash when outside the house or yard.
4. In order to make traveling with your pet more manageable, be sure that your pet is comfortable in a crate or carrier, even if you don’t use one on a regular basis.
5. Know basic pet first aid such as how to stop bleeding and treat lacerations. Always approach a sick, injured or scared animal slowly and cautiously. Even your own pet can be aggressive when in pain or frightened. More pet first aid info at RedCross.org
6. Purchase or assemble a basic pet first aid kit that includes gauze pads, gauze roll/ bandages, thermometer, tweezers, hydrogen peroxide, antibiotic ointment, Q-tips, instant cold pack and rags or rubber tubing for a tourniquet.
7. Make sure that you have a pet emergency supply kit that includes an ample supply of food and water, blankets, a spare leash and collar, food bowls, garbage bags and any needed medication and a recent photo of your pet. See full pet emergency supply kit checklist
8. Remain as calm as possible during stressful or emergency situations - your pet is easily influenced by your behavior and will mirror your stress or panic.
9. Be aware of the dangers of common household items - from poisons and pesticides to chocolate and certain houseplants - and keep them away from your pet.
10. Be aware that extreme temperatures have drastic effects on pets. Heat exhaustion is often caused by leaving pets in parked cars or over-exercising pets during hot weather. To cool off an overheated pet, offer plenty of water, wet his or her body and paws with cool water, then fan.

Don’t forget the warnings about CHOCOLATE year-round. I just wrote about the near-fatal misadventures of my chocolate lab, Bandit, this week in “Double Chocolate Lab”. He’s alive, looking a little the worse for wear, and my chocolate-stained carpets are still drying.

Tip number 1, ID Tags, I can’t say how important these are! So simple and cheap too. Always remember to have a spare with different contact info on for holidays or if your pet stays with a friend. Your address is no use if you are on holiday 300 miles away (either with or without your pet)!

We really have to pay attention on our dogs especially if they love playing with anything. As maybe as possible put the foods or things they are allergic to on higher places or keep it in a locked cabinet. Everyday will be happier if we will see our dog happy and out of danger. Thank you for the nice post. I learned a lot from you.

Interesting and great post! Are you still wondering why your dog is a lot different from those energetic dogs you see in parks? A training might’ve been missing with your dog. Don’t take this privilege away from your dog and visit this site howtotraindog.net now and start noticing the difference.

couldn’t agree more, especially item 2 above - ‘train your dog…’. I see all too often an untrained dog in my salon and they are just plain naughty largely becuase their owners haven’t taken the time to have their dog trained. Hope you don’t mind, but I have also referred this blog to my clients as it may help them in the management of their dog

The only way to make them be happy and smiley (tail shaker) all the time, is to keep them loose and let them take a travels by themselves as much as they like. (i didnt say there are no problems with that…)

What about these dog id chips I have seen about. Are they useful or do they even work without harming them dog?
March 5th, 2010 at 3:59 pm
Your point 8 I think is one the key ones, staying calm. The minute you start to panic a dog will sense it and as you say pick it up. Don’t forget our pets love us as we do them and they not only share our happiness but also our sadness so always try and be as calm as possible when they are unhappy

I couldn’t agree more with the point on effectively training your dog. So many people let badly-trained dogs off the leash when they go out and this can lead to all sorts of problems. Dogs can dash into roads, get into fights with other dogs or, in the UK at least, can even be shot by farmers if they’re caught annoying livestock. Either train your dog carefully or keep it on a leash, please!
May 1st, 2010 at 6:51 am
Regarding point 9 above there are a surprising number of normal household items (even food stuffs) that can be toxic to pets. For example if you’re going to give a dog chocolate, it really must be pet-safe chocolate bought from a pet store rather than human chocolate which can lead to serious problems for some dogs.

Thanks for nice tips! I just read a story of Eleven-year-old Labrador blowing the horn of the car to get the attention of his owner. A lady takes her dog with her to ran an errand and comes back home, pulls in the driveway and forgets the poor dog in the car, after a hour home, while cleaning, she heard a horn blow, she stops cleaning to investigate but doesn’t see anyone so she went back inside to finish cleaning, after the second time she realizes its her dog trying to get her attention and see’s the Labrador in the drivers seat. Eleven-year-old Max is fine and health.. that’s one smart doggie! The best thing to do in summer months is leave your pet home and not in the car, even with the window down its still way to hot for it, like being in a oven…

Thanks for the tips you have shared here. On top of that, I believe there are numerous factors which keep your motor insurance premium lower. One is, to consider buying vehicles that are within the good listing of car insurance businesses. Cars which can be expensive are usually more at risk of being lost. Aside from that insurance coverage is also good value of your truck, so the more expensive it is, then the higher a premium you spend.
