Ever get that feeling that you want two dogs?

    By cuzzy | September 25, 2008

For all of us who have a dog, it is one of the best experiences there is. They are truly a best friend. So why not double that feeling and get a second dog? Hmmm if it were only that easy. Lately I have been seeign puppys and rememebering how much fun they are and how great it would be to see Bosco have a little brother or sister to play with.

Of course my mind starts to remember all of the work and all of the sleep I did not get when I basically raised Bosco on my own.

Two dogs equals twice the work and puppy work is even harder.

I have no fears that Bosco would not get a long with a new dog but at this point in my life I don’t think I have the space.

I have to stop thinking of all the fun moments of watching them play and being cute and snap back to reality and remember the pains of doing it.

Expense is a big one as well. More food, toys, vet trips and boarding costs.

I have been told that having two is not that hard because they entertain each other but for now I think I like how it is with one chocolate guy who does not ask much of me other than food, one long walk per day and lots of affection.

For those who have more than one dog, how is it? I think I will wait til I live in a place with a bigger yard although I don’t want Bosco to get too old.

Ah the back and forth, such is life.

Better go and play with my one guy now. Have a great day.

I had that feeling and acted on it after my first dog was about 2 years old. Dog #1 was (is) the love of my life and very attached to me. I thought it would do her well to have a friend and not have to follow me around her whole life. I rescued a second pup at 11wks old and brought her home. It was a lot of work at first, but also the best decision I could have ever made. I never knew I could love another dog as much as my first, until I had my second. And while the 2nd dog likes her people well enough, she is more attached to her dog. It was good for the puppy.. Dog 1 has enjoyed it too, but is still attached to me as ever, so my theory did not go as planed. Not every dog is meant to have a playmate. I think mine would have been perfectly content to be the only one. However, they do enjoy their play time and it does provide companionship and loads of entertainment for us humans. Good luck in your efforts to decide. You will make the right choice when it comes right down to it.

Thanks Wendy, yeah that is what is great about labs, they can go either way. They are take it as it comes dogs and always adjust.

Great post. Probably a good idea to not take on too much responsibility when you consider that it is a living creature that you are adding to your life.

We have reciently started to take our parents dog at the weekend when they are away. previously it wasn’t and option because she, unlike Tia doesn’t like cats (and we have one!) With Jovi being a lot older now, 14 years old in fact she is a little less agressive. Only a little mind!

When we have Tia and Jovi together out walking I can see how much they both love it so much I do think about having another dog. That said the extra mess and the fact they want to play all the time can really get on top of me. They wind each other up so much that they never rest! It drives me crazy after a few days! It’s bad enough the dog and the cat playing but 2 dogs is crazy!

In an ideal world where we had the room, the time and the money(!) for 2 dogs I wouldn’t think twice. In the real world though it just wont happen.

We are a two dog family. Its not that hard, because Rusty is well behaved, but Boomer is a pain and two of him would be too much. I guess it depends largely on the dogs.

The worst part is affording the medical bills that are needed.

We’ve got two dogs, one small and one big. It’s nice and no trouble at all. The costs for food and vet depend on the size of the dogs.

We are a two dog family. I have a chocolate lab and am so grateful he has a friend. It in no way takes away from his attachment towards me (he still follows me around wherever I go), but I do not feel guilty if I have to leave them home alone. I love watching them wrestle around in the backyard. For me two is no more trouble than one, and the good outweighs the bad. The for sure entertain each other!
